Planners Unmasked | Matt Box

WHAT THREE SKILLS SHOULD EVERY GOOD PLANNER POSSESS?

- Curiosity: Make the mundane fascinating.

- Brevity: Turn the complicated into something concise & clear

- Empathy: Put yourself in others shoes

WHAT IS THE SKILL PEOPLE COMING INTO THE INDUSTRY MOST NEED (AND OFTEN DON'T HAVE)?

The ability to drop the ego and ask the 'stupid questions'. We should all aim to understand our client's problems more, not show off how much we already know.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER HIGHLIGHT SO FAR?

Eating pizza in the name of research and getting paid for it.

AND WHAT MAKES YOU CRINGE WHENEVER YOU THINK ABOUT IT?

Too many to mention.

Probably leaving my work laptop on a train after a work party.

Stressful hangover.

WHO OR WHAT IS THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR CAREER AND WHY?

My old senior told me to 'make it up' as I go along and just to make sure what I do is good.

Most liberating advice I've ever had.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR JOB, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Timesheets (& the way we charge clients. It feels old fashioned.)

WHICH BOOKS ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU AND WHY?

- The Art of Looking Sideways by Alan Fletcher: the book I bought as a designer and treasure as a planner .

- The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday: Great application of stoic philosophy made relevant today.

- Ogilvy on Advertising by David Ogilvy : Solid gold wisdom that has stood the test of time.

HOW DO YOU WIND DOWN?

- I paint. Usually watercolours

POKEMON GO OR A NICE WALK IN THE PARK?

Both obviously, that Weedle ain't gonna catch itself.

YOUR FAVOURITE CAMPAIGN?

Belly's gonna get ya - Reebok (Old but gold)
