The APG is a membership organisation that promotes smarter thinking.

We believe in the importance of equipping planners and strategists with the training and inspiration they need to be bold and rigorous thinkers.

Content for a great CV

by: Denise Williams

Did you know that the maximum time generally taken to read a CV is 30 seconds, and in most instances is more like 7 seconds? That’s the time it takes to make a cup of coffee, or the length of a Tik Tok video.

APG Top Talks

Over the coming weeks we will be putting on a host of Top Talks by top strategists.  We've asked them to choose topics that they are passionate about or think will be of most use to the APG community.  Some will have specific relevance to the times we are in, and others will have more general interest and applicability. They will all be good! They will be about 30 minutes long.

They are an APG member benefit and therefore for members only.  You can get your free ticket for each event on Eventbrite.

The Fundamentals of Strategy

We have designed a brand new course for anyone who uses planning and strategic thinking in their work, be it for an agency or client or consultancy.  The course tutor is Charlie Snow, one of the most inspired and brilliant strategic thinkers. It runs online so it's open to overseas delegates and actually works brilliantly on zoom.  The next iteration is 25th to 28th August so get in touch with Alison@apg.org.uk to book your place.

"How to survive as a first-time freelancer"

by: Jon Leach

So, as a big-time planner, you have suddenly found yourself independent, solo, freelance, free as a bird (or laid off, unemployed, let go and chucked out of the nest, just to bracket off some other ways of describing the situation).

At the APG, we are very aware that this is a tricky time for many strategists. Some are rushed off their feet. Others are on furlough. And some have been made redundant. Whilst we can all be thinking about our next move all the time, for that last group it will have become much more pressing. I fall into that last group. Unfortunately, coronavirus has also brought my job to an end. One thing to remember above all else for anyo...

Therefore, your CV needs to work hard for you, and quickly – it needs to make you stand out and differentiate and elevate you from other candidates.

Here are some ideas on how to personalise your cv:

So, as a big-time planner, you have suddenly found yourself independent, solo, freelance, free as a bird (or laid off, unemployed, let go and chucked out of the nest, just to bracket off some other ways of describing the situation).

Suddenly you are responsible for bringing in the clients, the work and indeed the money. Because, to answer Marvin Gaye’s plaintive query about “what’s going on?”, suddenly, ain’t nothing going on b...

The only way to stay ahead of the curve is to shape it, not predict it.

Covid-19 is a tragedy, not an opportunity or a brief. But it’s a tragedy that we can learn and grow from, and one that forces us to question how we do business to adapt to people’s needs and make the world a better place.

Not often we get a second chance to re-imagine everything. Now certainly feels like the right time for it.

I could write three pages of cul...

What is the role of a planner in planning and a strategist in strategy? It can be such an ambiguous role you can spend half your job figuring what to do when your actual job should be helping brands figure out what to do. If you embrace the ambiguity it means you get to make it what you want it to be, put your energy where you want to get the most out of it and find roles and projects that excite and intrigue you.
